How to change a vehicles mileage

This question is often asked, how to change the mileage on a vehicle?  there isn’t one set way to change the mileage on a vehicle, primarily a lot depends on the age of the vehicle and then it simply comes down to each manufacturer.  There are 2 types of displays one is analogue the other is digital, the analogue system uses a set of numbers rotating on a drum which rotates on a spindle, these usually operate via gears and have a direct link by cable to the gearbox, As the gearbox end rotates it subsequently rotates the gears in the dashboard which in turn rotates the drum, mileage can be changed on these vehicles however it requires physical removal of the dash, the entire speedometer has to be dismantled to expose the gearbox settings, by physically rotating these digits any combination can be set.  Getting the alignment of the numbers can be very difficult but not impossible, you can always tell if any tampering has taken place when one or more of the numbers do not line up.

Later vehicles use a digital display therefore eliminating any need for a direct cable, these are usually operated electronically and are controlled via the ECU and various chips on the circuit board, to change the mileage on a digital display can be fairly straightforward providing you have the correct knowledge and equipment, some vehicles do not need to have any part of the dash removed, by simply connecting a cable to the OBD port and the other end to the programming device mileage can be set in a matter of seconds, this works well on vehicles that do not have additional memories.  Most vehicles however do have hidden memories, these can be in places where you would not expect memory to be stored for example memory can be stored in the light control module, in the key module, ECU and BSI units etc, for these vehicles it is important that mileage is corrected in every location, we are well aware that there are many companies that have changed mileage on a vehicle knowing very well other memories involved but only change the mileage on the dash, the reason being it may be easier to charge a customer £50 for 15 min work then charge £150.00 for a couple of hours work which also could lead to complications.  This is by far puts the customer in a very dangerous situation because should the vehicle ever go to a main dealer or any service check the actual mileage of the vehicle can be seen.

On some vehicles, the dash has to be stripped to reveal the circuit board behind the speedometer, once the correct chip that holds a memory has been located, a special clip is attached which allows the chip data to be read, this data is then copied and safely backed up, this is important because should anything go wrong the original data it can simply be put back, the chip is then heated and removed from the circuit board and is replaced by a new chip which can be programmed to hold the memory with the altered mileage.

Fix My Mileage has been a leader in the industry; we have also designed bespoke attachments which allow mileage is to be altered without removal of the entire dash.

It is important to point out that changing the mileage on the vehicle must not be used for financial gain, the law of this country takes this issue very seriously.
